If your dog is lost then you should do the following:
It is worth going to visit Rescue Centres to check that your dog has not been taken in as they have lots of stray handed in on a regular basis.
Putting posters up of your missing dog in your local area will also help. Ensure that your poster includes a current picture, description and a contact phone number. Also give these to the local Vets in the area. You should check with your insurance company as your pet insurance may cover the costs of a poster campaign.
To ensure the prompt return of your dog have them microchipped and get them a tag for their collar that has a couple of contact numbers on. Even if your dog wears a harness they still need to have a collar with a tag on.
If you are going on holiday and a relative or friend is looking after your dog, have a tag done with their contact details on. The reason being that if you away for a fortnight you may find your dog has been rehomed or PTS (Put To Sleep) before you get back. Council pounds only have to keep a dog 7 days before they either PTS (Put To Sleep) or rehome.
